What is Additional Handling surcharge for Dimensions

Writer's picture: Whitecloud FlyWhitecloud Fly

If your package has any of the following dimensions, it will incur an Additional Handling surcharge:

  • The longest side exceeds 48 inches or

  • The second longest side exceeds 30 inches or

  • The sum of the girth and the longest side is greater than 105 inches

Additionally, according to the latest announcements by UPS in October 2024 and FedEx in January 2025, when a package incurs an Additional Handling Surcharge due to its dimensions, the minimum billable weight for the package will be 40 lbs.

For example:

Company XX ships furniture via UPS. The package dimensions are 49x10x5 inches, with an actual weight of 20 lbs. The dimensional weight is calculated as 18 lbs using the formula: (49x10x5) / 139 = 17.62. Since the package’s longest side exceeds 48 inches, it incurs an Additional Handling Surcharge. As a result, the billable weight is 40 lbs instead of 20 lbs.
